    Current and Upcoming Classes

    Fall 2010 Adult Education Opportunities
Sunday is a great time to deepen your spiritual walk by attending Sunday School at the service opposite the one you usually attend for worship.  Take advantage of teaching that will draw you deeper into study of the Bible. All Saint's Sunday School classes offer timely insights that will help you wherever you are in your spiritual walk. Plan to join the Adventure

    Sunday Morning Sunday School
9:15 and 11 a.m. Jesus and the I AM Statements in John.
In Exodus 3:14, God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM’ has sent me to you.’” This name signified a special revelation of God to His people. It has been translated Jehovah or YHWH and is translated in the Hebrew as Adonai or Lord. ‘I AM’ was considered the personal name of God and was never spoken aloud so that it could not be taken in vain. So, for Jesus to speak this name and apply it to Himself was not only bold but was considered by many to be blasphemy. But, Jesus did apply various versions of “I AM” to Himself; the gospel of John shares at least 7 times He applied the name to Himself and His ministry. Each week the class will examine one of the “I AM” statements beginning with, “I AM the Bread of Life” on September 12. Each week’s study will examine one of the variations of this name, why and how Jesus applied it to Himself and what that means in our lives and our ministries. Bring a Bible and a notebook and an open, teachable heart. The same class will be taught at both 9:15 and 11:00 a.m.; in the youth center at 9:15 a.m. and in the multi-purpose room at 11 a.m.

    9:15 Counterfeit Gods
The Empty Promises of Money, Sex, and Power, and the Only Hope That Matters...Success, money, true love, marriage, children, and the life you’ve always wanted.  Many of us place our faith in these things, believing they hold the key to happiness. Yet many of us feel lost, alone, disenchanted, and resentful.  But the truth is that we have made counterfeit gods of these good things – gods that can’t give us what we really need. In this class we will be using Timothy Keller’s book Counterfeit Gods to explore the modern-day idols we make out of the good things we have in our lives.  There is only one God who can wholly satisfy our desires and we will explore ways to put Him before all others. This 8-week study will be discussion-driven with about an hour’s worth of reading homework each week.  Books are $14 and will be available on the first day of class.  Class will meet Sunday mornings at 9:15 a.m. in Room 6 (former SOMA Office) September 12 – October 31.

Sunday School beginning later in the fall:  (look for details in upcoming publications)
•Bible Study: Prophecies of the Coming of Christ (7- week class)
•The Reason for God (book study)
•Taking It Home: Spiritual Transformation in the Home (7-week workshop using Advent devotions as a starting  place.)

    Sunday Evening
    Foundations for Ministry: Old Testament
Part I of an exciting class that covers the entire Bible in two years.  The class beginning this fall is the first of the two years and covers the text of the Old Testament, including teaching on a variety of Bible study skills. “Your clergy firmly believe that the Foundations course is an essential building block for fulfilling our church’s vision to be a church ‘overflowing with love and healing power.’ Our vision declares that effective proclamation of the Good News of salvation should be built on a sound knowledge of Scripture: Foundations will give you a wonderful framework for that knowledge.” Class will meet on Sunday evening in the sanctuary from 6:00-8:00 p.m. beginning on Sunday September 12th. Please pick up a Foundations for Ministry brochure for further details and to register.  Materials for the course will be available at the first class meeting.  Workbooks ($15.00 each) and an approved Study Bible (see brochure for approved options), are required for this course (Bibles are $27.00 to $35.00, depending on the version chosen.), and will be available if you do not have one and would like to purchase one.  Some scholarship money is available, so please let us know if you have need. You will need your bible and your study workbook for each class. Please register for this course by September 5th and note: there will be an upcharge for those registering after that date to accommodate expedited shipping and handling of materials. Contact Desiree Barker at 703-670-0093 ext. 8 or by email at dbarker@allsaintsdalecity.org for more information or to register.  It is also possible to register online at www.allsaintsdalecity.org/foundations.

    Tuesday Morning
Fingerprints of God: Recognizing God’s Touch on Your Life
Do you need God’s touch in your life? Are you looking for ways to connect your real life with your spiritual life? “God’s essential touch separates us from all other created beings. His touch warms, affirms, and guides us: it communicates value and self-esteem.” This 7-week discussion and DVD-based study explores the six things we can experience because of God’s touch: honor, intimacy, shelter, guidance, redemption, and refinement. Each week there will be time for discussion of homework, and a video teaching. The workbook includes the guide for daily homework and the listening guides for the DVD teaching segments. Workbooks are $9 and will be available the first day. Class will meet in the Youth Center from 9:30-11:30 a.m. from September 14 through October 26. Nursery care is available upon request.

    Tuesday Evening

The Marriage Course - This 8-week experience is designed to help any married couple strengthen their relationship. Group time is a combination of DVD teaching and time for each couple to share and talk with one another. Each evening will begin with a prepared dinner followed by the teaching and group time. Dinner will be a larger group experience around tables of 8, while dessert and coffee will be shared as a couple during small group time. Space is limited. The first group will be for 21 couples. Due to limited space, registration will be handled on first come first serve basis and payment will be due at registration. The class fee is $75 per couple (some scholarship money is available). The group will meet Tuesdays beginning September 28 from 7:00-9:15 pm. Childcare is available and should be requested at time of registration. Group leaders will be Jim and Nan Shotwell, Dan and Kristin Morgan and Mark and Chris Brown. Please visit the Adult Education Office to pick up a registration form. Thursday Morning
Chase the Goose: Reclaiming the Adventure of Living a Spirit-Led Life
Celtic Christians have long called the Holy Spirit An Geadh-Glas, or the Wild Goose. Life in the Spirit is meant to be mysterious, unpredictable and adventuresome but many Christians have lost that sense of spiritual adventure. This 7-week study will examine 6 things that can hinder our Christian life (responsibility, routine, assumptions, guilt, failure and fear.) The study is based on Mark Batterson’s bestseller Wild Goose Chase. Participants will read that book and complete weekly homework that will be a combination of workbook discussion questions, Bible study and related articles. Some understanding of Bible study is required and there will be about 2 hours of homework each week. Class time will be discussion, video teaching and Bible study. Materials are $20 and available the first day of class. Additional online and printed materials will be used throughout the class and will be supplied as needed to support the study. If you are looking for a way to recharge your spiritual life through a fresh encounter with the Holy Spirit, plan to attend this study. Class will meet in the Youth Center from 9:30-11:15 a.m. beginning September 16.

    Saturday Morning
Men’s Bible Study (Beginning September 18)
The men’s Saturday Bible study will focus on the letters of Paul to the church in America. This is a practical study, with a goal of defining the Biblical principles we need for the development and maintenance of an effective, authentic Christian life. No previous Bible knowledge necessary, and you are encouraged to join the study any time. Expect your life to change by the eternal Word of God. Bring a friend. Class will start promptly at 8 a.m. and finish at 9 a.m., meeting in the sanctuary. How you structure your calendar defines what’s important in your life. Men, put God’s Word first on Saturday morning and watch what He will do.
